“Citizenship” is usually associated with cities or states, less so with early medieval Western Europe. Nevertheless, citizenship discourse is found in the post-Roman and early medieval world in sources that express changing social and cultural identities. In this process the terminology referring to “citizenship” and rooted in ancient citizenship discourses underwent a radical change of meaning. Read more
